Hazara United is the global digital home for the Hazara people - a platform built to inform the world about one of history's most persecuted and least-known communities, to connect a community spread across dozens of countries, and to preserve a culture and language that deserve to outlast the forces that have tried to erase them. We document the truth. We celebrate the people. We refuse to let the story go untold.
The gap this fills
The Hazara are one of the most persecuted ethnic minorities on earth. They are also one of the least known.
Scattered across more than 90 countries, a people dispersed through wave after wave of forced displacement. A community with more than a thousand years of documented presence in the region - a history that most of the world has never encountered. A culture of extraordinary depth - language, music, poetry, art - quietly at risk of erosion as a generation of young Hazara grows up without the tools to connect to it.
And until now: no unified digital home.
Hazara United exists to fill that gap. This is not another crisis-response page or single-issue advocacy site. It is the platform the global Hazara community has not yet had - a place to learn, to connect, to remember, and to act.
Who the Hazara are
The Hazara are a Dari-speaking ethnic group with roots in the central highlands of Afghanistan, a region known historically as Hazarajat. With an estimated 9 million people worldwide - including large Hazara communities in Australia, Pakistan, Iran, Europe, Canada, and the United States - they are one of the largest ethnic communities without a globally recognized homeland.
They are also one of the most targeted.
Over more than a century of systematic persecution - from the massacres under Abdur Rahman Khan in the 1890s to the Taliban's ongoing campaign of displacement, exclusion, and targeted killing - the Hazara have faced attempts at erasure that demand documentation and demand response. The Taliban's return in August 2021 accelerated what was already a decades-long pattern: land confiscated, communities forcibly removed from Hazarajat, girls locked out of education, young men killed in ISKP bombings targeting Hazara neighborhoods in Kabul, Quetta, and Mazar-e-Sharif.

What the Hazara story also is
Persecution is part of the Hazara story. It is not the whole of it.
The Hazara are the people of the Buddhas of Bamiyan - 1,500-year-old monumental figures carved into the cliffs of the Hazarajat, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 in an act of cultural vandalism the world watched and still mourns. They are the people of the dambura, a two-stringed instrument whose sound is unmistakably Hazara. Of Rumi, born in Balkh, and Faiz Mohammad Katib Hazara, whose Siraj al-Tawarikh chronicled the Hazara people - and the ghazals and rubai in Farsi recited in Hazara households across continents. Of Nowruz celebrations that connect Afghan, Iranian, and Central Asian communities across continents. Of artists, scholars, doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs who have built remarkable lives in every country that offered them safety.
The Hazara story is one of extraordinary survival and extraordinary culture. Both deserve documentation. Both deserve celebration.
What Hazara United does
Hazara United is four things at once:
An information resource. Authoritative, factual, well-sourced. We are building the most comprehensive public-facing knowledge base about the Hazara people in the English language - history, culture, language, persecution documentation, community data. If you are a journalist who has 20 minutes to get up to speed, a student writing a paper, or a policymaker preparing for a meeting, this is where you come.
An advocacy platform. We document what is happening to the Hazara today and we give people the tools to respond. Template letters ready to send. Petition links. Country-specific resources for reaching the people who can act on it. We translate outrage into action.
A community space. We connect Hazara communities worldwide. Community events, an organization directory, a network of Hazara communities by city and country. The infrastructure for a globally scattered people to find each other.
A cultural archive. Music, poetry, art, oral histories, historical photographs, language resources. The cultural record of a people whose institutions inside Afghanistan have been systematically destroyed. We preserve what others are trying to erase.
How we work
Hazara United operates by four editorial commitments:
Non-partisan. We take no position on internal Hazara political debates or factional divisions. Our mission is the community, not any organization within it. Every Hazara - and every ally of the Hazara - is welcome here.
Factual. We work from reputable sources and we cite what we publish. We do not sensationalize. We do not inflate. The documented reality of the Hazara situation is grave enough to speak for itself. (We can still get things wrong. If you spot an error, a missing source, or a name or date that needs correcting, tell us and we will fix it.)
Source-aware. The historical record we draw from skews heavily to English-language academic and journalistic sources, because those are the ones most accessible to outside researchers. Primary Dari and Farsi material, community oral history, and family-held documentation sit largely outside that record. We work with what we can reach, and we are honest that this is a partial picture. As translation capacity grows, and as community members share what they hold, we widen it. If your family carries documents, photographs, letters, or recorded memory that belongs in this record, write to us at our contact page.
Human-dignity-centered. We do not reduce the Hazara to their suffering. Every story we tell acknowledges the full humanity - the history, the culture, the achievement, the humor, the resilience - of the people we exist to serve.
Community-first. We are built for the Hazara, not about them. The platform exists to serve Hazara communities, connect young Hazara to their heritage, and amplify Hazara voices - not to represent, interpret, or speak on their behalf.
How this started
Hazara United was founded by Hadi Maktabi, a Hazara-American who watched his community navigate decades of crisis without a unified digital home or a single reliable place to find information about who they are. He built one. Built and rebuilt over more than a decade, this version launched in 2026 - the work of one person trying to make a difference, driven by an outsized ambition: to become what every comparable minority community - Armenian, Uyghur, Tibetan, Kurdish - has built for itself. The authoritative, permanent, living digital home for the global Hazara community.

هزارهها مردم بتهای بامیاناند - تندیسهای یادمانیِ ۱۵۰۰ ساله که در صخرههای هزارجات تراشیده شده بودند و در سال ۲۰۰۱ توسط طالبان در عملی از تخریب فرهنگی ویران شدند که جهان شاهد آن بود و هنوز سوگوار آن است. آنان مردم دمبورهاند، سازی دوتاره که صدای آن بهروشنی هزاره است. مردم مولانا جلالالدین بلخی، زادۀ بلخ، و فیض محمد کاتب هزاره که سراجالتواریخ او تاریخ مردم هزاره را ثبت کرد - و غزلها و رباعیهای فارسی که در خانههای هزاره در چندین قاره خوانده میشوند. مردم جشنهای نوروز که جوامع افغان، ایرانی و آسیای میانه را در سراسر قارهها به هم پیوند میدهند. مردم هنرمندان، پژوهشگران، پزشکان، انجنیران، و کارآفرینانی که در هر کشوری که امنیت به آنان داد، زندگیهای چشمگیری ساختهاند.

هزاره یونایتد چه میکند
هزاره یونایتد همزمان چهار چیز است:

چگونه کار میکنیم
هزاره یونایتد بر اساس چهار تعهد ویراستارانه کار میکند:
غیر حزبی. ما در بحثهای سیاسی درونهزارهای یا تقسیمهای حزبی موضعی نمیگیریم. مأموریت ما خود جامعه است، نه هیچ سازمانی در درون آن. هر هزاره - و هر متحد هزارهها - اینجا خوشآمد است.
واقعگرا. ما از منابع معتبر کار میکنیم و آنچه را منتشر میکنیم استناد میدهیم. هیجانآفرینی نمیکنیم. اغراق نمیکنیم. واقعیت مستند وضعیت هزارهها بهاندازۀ کافی سنگین هست که خودش سخن بگوید. این چگونه آغاز شد
